Setting

This story takes place in the town of Millerton in the 1960's.  Millerton is a typical small town, probably somewhere in the Midwest, where everyone seems to know each other and everybody likes to gossip.  Hattie says that half the time when she gets back from one of her walks into town, her mom already knows where she has been.  The author gives a detailed description about the streets and houses in the town.  She also describes the businesses in town like the movie theater, the Meat Wagon, the shoe store, her Papa's law office, the redbrick library, and Clayton's Yarn Shop.  As Hattie walks through town, everyone says hello to her.  She feels comfortable there.

In Millerton, there are three important locations.  The first is the house where Hattie and her parents live.  They own and live in a boardinghouse.   It is the third largest house in town, but no one thinks it is a mansion.  They have borders living in the house with them.  The house has a big front porch and a parlor where everyone can sit together.  The boardinghouse is two stories tall, and on each floor there are three bedrooms.  All the boarders have their own room in the house.

Another important location is Nana and Papa's house, which is right around the corner from Hattie's house.  Nana and Papa's house has cooks, maids, gardeners, and chauffeurs.  They live in the second largest house in Millerton.  It is a mansion and is much fancier than the Owen's house.  Nana says that the Owen's house is a business, but Nana's house is a home.

Another important setting in Millerton is Fred Carmel's Funtime Carnival.  The Carnival has rides, a ferris wheel, games, a side show, food, and lots of lights everywhere.  Hattie loves the Carnival and becomes great friends with Leila, Fred Carmel's daughter.  Hattie goes to the carnival every day.
