Author

Ann M. Martin is the author of the book A Corner of the Universe.  She was born on August 12, 1955, in Princeton, New Jersey.  Growing up, Ann loved to read and write.  Her favorite books were The Secret Garden and The Wizard of Oz.  Her favorite writers were Roald Dahl and Astrid Lingren, the author of the Pippi Longstocking books.  Ann graduated from Smith College in 1977.  That year, she wrote her first book, Bummer Summer, which was about girl adjusting to her father's new wife.  Other books Ann has written are Leo the Magnificent, P.S. Long Letter Later, Snail Mail No More, The Doll People, The Meanest Doll in the World, Belle Teal, and A Dogs Life.  Ann now lives in upstate New York, with three cats and a dog.

Ann was inspired to write the book, A Corner of the Universe, because when she was young, she, like Hattie, learned that she had an uncle who was mentally ill.   Unlike Hattie, Ann never had the chance to meet her uncle who died before she was born.  While Ann's uncle was the inspiration for Adam's character, he and her family were not really like the characters in the book.   Ann is moved by Adam, the character she created, who has given her the strength to lift the corners of her universe.
